Surrounded by her loving family, Joanne H. “Jan” Reed passed away peaceably at home in Kingwood on Friday morning, June 10. She was 90.
Jan was born May 10, 1932, in McAlpin, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Arthur J. and Mary Hoff Pugh. Her mother was a music teacher, and her father was a general superintendent for the Lillybrook Coal Company near Beckley.
After graduating from Stoco High School in 1950, Jan attended WVU where she met her husband, Neil A. Reed. She was a member of Wesley Foundation and Kappa Delta sorority, graduating with a B.S. in Medical Technology in 1954.
She worked at Vincent Pallotti Hospital and for Dr. Robert Mahan in Morgantown. Later in life, she became a Diet Center counselor and was owner of The Haven, a natural foods pantry.
In Kingwood, Jan was active in the Wesley United Methodist Church, where she sang in the chancel choir for many years. She also sang soprano in the all-women barbershop quartet known as “The Uncalled Four,” which appeared on the nationally-televised Ted Mack Amateur Hour in New York City.
She was a charter member of Beta Sigma Phi and a charter member of the James C. McGrew Historical Society. She and Neil were longtime members of the Preston County Buckwheat Stompers square dance club and served in a variety of roles for the Preston County Buckwheat Festival.
Jan supported those in need throughout her life, offering gentle Christian counsel to family and friends. Additionally, she adopted animals whenever she had a chance.
Jan is survived by her husband of 67 years, Neil, from Kingwood, and three children and their spouses: Kim and Alan Clinkinbeard of Greenville, Indiana, Tammy and Jeff Sisler of Kingwood, and Stephen and Leni Reed of Summerville, SC.
She is also survived by four grandchildren: Dr. Zachary Sisler (Delilah) of Carlisle, PA, Luis Clinkinbeard of Greenville, IN, Alexandra Shreve (Richard) of Philippi, WV, and Ethan Neil Reed of Summerville, SC. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her sister, Mary Sue Koubek, of Walnut Creek, CA.
She is predeceased by her brother, Jay Pugh, of Fairfax, Va. and Marissa Clinkinbeard, of Greenville, IN.
The family wishes to thank all of Jan’s extraordinary caregivers, including Norma Costello, Esther Sanders, Leni Reed, Alexandra Sisler, Robin Feather, Melody “Blue” Keller, and all the caring staff members at WV Caring, along with Dr. Bonnie Forman.
Friends will be received at the Kingwood Funeral Home, 295 S. Price Street Kingwood on Sunday, June 12 from 4-7 pm and on Monday, June 13, 2022, at the Wesley United Methodist Church at 107 High St. from 10-11 am the funeral hour with Reverend Jonathan Nettles officiating. Interment will be in the Maplewood Cemetery in Kingwood.
